Marie T. Turner (Ambrose), longtime Winthrop Public Servant and Activist died at her late residence on Wednesday, July 25. She was 81 years old. She first was employed by the Town in 1963 and continued in various capacities until the time of her death. She was the first woman elected to the Board of Selectmen and served in various capacities, as Town Clerk for 13 years, Secretary to the Board of Selectmen, Deputy Tax Collector, Asst. Town Treasurer and many more. She was on the MWRA Board of Directors since 1996 as the Winthrop Representative. She was a member of the Bay State Freedoms Foundation, the Winthrop Emblem Club, the Winthrop Improvement & Historical Association, the Winthrop Mixed Lodge Sons of Italy, the Winthrop Rotary Club etc.
Born in East Boston the daughter of the late Celia (Mack) and Louis Ambrose, she was the beloved wife of the late Willard R. Turner, the devoted mother of Willard R. Turner Jr. and his wife Florine of Worcester, Terri Furlong of Winthrop & Kathleen Turner of Winthrop & the dear sister of Edwin Ambrose of Winthrop, William Ambrose of New Hampshire & Sheila Caggiano of Shrewsbury. She is also survivved by 6 loving grandchildren & 7 great grandchildren.
Her funeral will be conducted on Saturday, July 28 at 9:00 AM from the Ernest P. Caggiano & Son - O'Maley Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop St., Winthrop followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church 320 Winthrop St. at 10:00 AM. Visitation on Friday from 4-8 PM.
