Winthrop and East Boston have lost one of their finest sons and a sterling member of "The Greatest Generation". Louis Gene Maglio, a 55 year resident of Lewis Ave. in Winthrop and a resident of Brooksby Village, Peabody since 2009 has passed away at age 94 on July 19, 2012. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Theresa M. Maglio of Winthrop who left us in 2008.

Louis was born and raised in East Boston and spent his formative and early married years there. He was a product of the East Boston School System and a graduate of Boston University receiving his B.S. and Masters of Education Degrees. He dedicated his professional life to improving the lives of youthful Juvenile Offenders. A nationally noted figure in the field of juvenile issues, he was the Executive Director of the Citizenship Training Group , a branch of the Boston Juvenile Court for many years and ended his career as the Chief Probation Officer of the Boston Juvenile Court. He was also an Associate Professor at the Boston University Dept. of Special Education. In his retirement years he was also an Associate Professor and Lecturer at Northeastern University. His storybook concurrent Army Military Service began with his enlistment in 1941 as a Private and with hard work, continuing education and meritorious service ended with his discharge as a Captain in 1946. During WW II he was stationed overseas for 28 months. His dedication to the military continued with a long career in the U.S. Army Reserve and he retired from the Army Reserve attaining the rank of Lieut. Colonel. In 1952 Louis was named by the Boston Junior Chamber of Commerce to the "Outstanding Young Men of Greater Boston". Other notables in this group of eight were the future President of The United States, John F. Kennedy, and Massachusetts Senator Edward W. Brooke. He was a member of numerous local, state and national Boards, Appointments and Community Service Organizations. He published many works on the subject of Juvenile Crime as well as training manuals for those entering the field. He was a great motivational speaker and an inspiration to all those who knew him. He is listed in such publications as: "Who''s Who in the East"; Who''s Who in American Education, National Social Register", "The 2000 Men of Achievement in 1969", "The National Register of Prominent Americans", "International Notables", " International Who''s Who in Community Service", among many others.

He was a faithful and devout member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Winthrop Parish, befriending the many pastors through the years and always helping out in any way he could with parish duties. He and his wife were fixtures at the weekly Saturday afternoon Mass.

When Louis decided to retire, he and his wife Theresa enjoyed 25 years of wintering at their home in the Sarasota, Florida area, but always looked forward to summering at their beloved home in Winthrop.

Louis started the "Street of Flags" on Lewis Avenue, prompting all residents to continuously post an American Flag proudly on their property and that tradition continues to this day.

In addition to his wife Theresa, he was predeceased by 5 siblings, Anthony, Jenny, Michael, Carmella and Anna. He leaves his sons Louis G. Maglio, Jr. and his wife Marilyn of North Andover, his son, Paul L. Maglio and his wife Virginia of Ipswich, 3 loving grandchildren, Christina and her husband Thomas Babcock of Waltham, Brianna and Luke of Ipswich. He also leaves behind numerous loving nieces and nephews.

The Funeral will be conducted from the Ernest P. Caggiano & Son - O''Maley Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop St., Winthrop on Wednesday, July 25, at 9:00 AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church at 10:00 AM. Visiting hours at the funeral home on Tuesday July 24 from 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM. Relatives & friends are cordially invited. Interment with full military honors will follow the Mass in the Belle Isle Section of Winthrop Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be sent to the charity of one''s choice.
