Robert F. Sloane, Jr. of Pond St., Winthrop passed away at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston on June 19, 2016. He was 92 years old. Born in Somerville, he was the beloved son of the late Katherine L. (Tobin) and Robert F. Sloane, Sr.. A longtime resident of Winthrop, he enlisted in the Navy during WWII. He was torpedoed and sunk on the Alcoa Rambler in the South Atlantic and spent over one week in a lifeboat without water or food. The lifeboat made its way to the Brazilian coast and he was rescued. After his rescue, he was stationed on the Freighter William W. Gearhard. With troops and ammunition on board, the ship was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Salerno, Italy. He finished the war stationed on the USS Wasatch in the Pacific. After his honorable discharge he went on to work as an offset printer for a commercial printing company.
He was the devoted husband of the late Ethel R. (Rasmussen) and the loving father of Robert Sloane of Chilmark and the late Patricia Fowells. He was the dear brother of the late George Sloane and Rena Sloane. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the funeral home on Sunday, June 26, 2016 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, June 27, 2016 at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 10:00 AM.
