On September 17, 2023, Bernard F. Kelly was called home by his Heavenly Father. Bernard is survived by his wife Maureen Kelly of Winthrop, MA. Bernard was loved by his brothers Daniel and Robert, sisters Linda and Kathleen and his nieces, nephews, in laws and extended family. Bernard leaves behind many close friends in the Winthrop community and far beyond.
A devout Catholic, Bernard was member of the Michael’s The Archangel Parish in Winthrop; he also served as an altar boy at St. Patrick’s Church in Roxbury. Bernard was a 1968 graduate of Boston College High School and distinguished Latin Scholar. Bernard was fluent in several languages including Russian, Spanish, Latin and Greek. He was awarded a full scholarship to Holy Cross College in Worcester Massachusetts where he graduated with High Honors.
Beloved by his longtime customers at The White Hen Pantry he would often engage customers in conversations ranging from literature to world events.
Bernard was passionate about politics and social change and worked on several major political campaigns, including that of the late Robert F. Kennedy. Bernard was a voracious reader and prolific writer. He was a regular contributor to the Winthrop Sun Transcript where he was a longtime book review critic.
Most importantly, Bernie was a loving husband, brother, uncle and caring friend who will be missed beyond measure. His kind and gentle nature and generosity of spirit was unparalleled. He was a compassionate man, and he endeared himself to all he met. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. The family asks only that you remember Bernie warmly and keep him in your hearts.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the funeral mass on Saturday, November 18, 2023 in the St. John the Evangelist Church 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 10:00 AM.
