George A. Nicosia of Winthrop passed away peacefully at Pilgrim Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody on September 10, 2023. He was 81 years old. Born in Somerville, George was the beloved son of the late Virginia A. (Magliulo) Nicosia and Fred F. Nicosia.
A resident of Winthrop for over 50 years, he was the devoted husband of the late Kathleen A. (Hawk) Nicosia and the loving father of Marianne DeLuca and her husband Frank of Stoneham. Dear brother of Carol Nicosia of Waltham and the late Dolores Hajjar, Frederick A. Nicosia, Florence Cirignano and Virginia Sarmatzis. Brother-in-law of Stan Sarmatzis of Woburn, Jim Hawk of Chevy Chase MD, Larry and Patti Hawk of Gilbert AZ, Kim and Jeff Meyer of Painesville OH and the late Leo Hajjar and John Cirignano. Cherished grandfather of Bruno and Gino DeLuca. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
George graduated from Somerville High School in 1959 and later went on to receive his Associate Degree in Applied Science in Management at Newbury Junior College in 1976. He enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War reaching the rank of Private E-2. After his honorable discharge, George went on to work for 35 years as a ticket agent and later managing agents in passenger services at American Airlines.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM followed by a funeral mass at St. John the Evangelist Church at 320 Winthrop St., Winthrop at 11:30 AM. Services will conclude with the interment in Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett.
