James H. Merchant, Jr. of Winthrop passed away at the Chelsea Soldier’s Home on November 28, 2021. He was 85 years old. Born in Boston he was the beloved son of Helen (Riley) and James H. Merchant, Sr. A life-long resident of Winthrop, he attended Winthrop schools where he excelled in football. James was the first winner of the Irving P. Alexander Award in 1954. After his graduation he enlisted in the United States Army reaching the rank of SP4. His military career led him to over 40 years as a Draftsman in Engineering.
He was the devoted husband of Sheryl K. (Biedrzycki) and the loving father of Jimmy Merchant and his wife Kathleen of Peabody, Mark Merchant and his wife Vicki of Texas, Sherry Pirkle and her husband Greg of Georgia and Dawn Sinibaldi and her husband Joe of Peabody. Dear brother of Mary Swansburg of Wilmington, Claire MacDonald of New Hampshire and Ronald Cunha of New Hampshire. Cherished grandfather of Jesse, Michaela, Julia, Joseph, Gianna, Shelby, Jaclyn, Matthew, Kara, Hailey, Braylon and Aspen.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation at St. Michael’s Chapel (Chelsea Soldier’s Home) 91 Crest Ave. Chelsea Ma. on Saturday, December 4, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. A funeral mass will be held in the chapel immediately following the visitation at 11:00 AM. Services will conclude with military honors in the Belle Isle section of Winthrop Cemetery.
