Mary (Zecchino) Gagliardi of Winthrop and formerly of East Boston, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023 after complications with dementia. She was 99 years old.
Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a strong, beautiful, saucy, smart and creative woman. She was a part of the greatest generation. Calvin Coolidge was president, movie tickets were 25 cents and the average price of a house was $7000. Mary lived through many of America's best and worst of times; including the Jazz Age, Great Depression and WW2. Being a woman of those times brought the burden of filling the man's place in sports, business and child rearing. Mary did her part by being a seamstress, sewing together military uniforms for our soldiers during WW2.
She married her husband, Angelo, of 72 years, and stayed home to raise her children. When her children grew, Mary worked in a factory on Bennington St. in East Boston as a seamstress and ended her career as an office manager of a store in Boston.
Mary loved to cook. She had her family over every Sunday for a home cooked meal. Everyone knew where they sat, they pitched in and had lots of fun. There was singing and dancing and celebrations in Nana's house. When Mary wasn't cooking, you could find her in her rocking chair crocheting a blanket for one of her family members. Mary and her husband frequently took the bus on an adventure to Foxwoods.
Mary, or Nana, as the kids called her, will be greatly missed.
She was the devoted wife of the late Angelo Gagliardi and the loving mother of Samuel Gagliardi and his late wife Barbara and Rosanne Tranfaglia and her husband John. She was the cherished grandmother of Kristin Coffey, Jodi Rice and her husband Chuck, Mark Gagliardi and Joey Gagliardi. Great grandmother of Kristina, Thomas, Avalina, John, Giana, Jack, Julia, Giovanni, Matilda and Ayah. Also survived by a sister and several late brothers and sisters.
Services and interment were private.
