Mike Maynard, Formula One enthusiast and lead foot, traveler and man’s man, and Bostonian-Anglophile by the way of family and interest, zipped through the eternal EZ Pass on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the too young age of 62.

The eldest of six children, Mike is the son of Joan Cotter (deceased) and David Maynard (deceased). He honed his admiralty over the younger five by using his keen intellect and stature.  His younger siblings: Meredith Rogers (wife of Jack Frost, of KPT), Marney Whittaker (wife of John, of Bradford), Mark (deceased), Megan Kirby (companion of Paul Panopoulas, of Lynn), and Matthew Maynard (fiancé of Julie Tobin, also of KPT), all have incredible stories of their brother.  Mike was born in Boston, grew up in Lexington and Harvard and lived in Tesno, Jamaica Plain, and Winthrop. He is also survived by his dad’s wife, Patricia and was Uncle Buck to Ashely Rogers and Bailey Bosson (wife of Cameron), Meredith “Dee” Vernatter (wife of Adam, mother of Alexander) and Ian Gresh, Shannon and Michaela Kirby.

As a young man, Mike said he thought he’d neither marry, nor have children. Ironically, he was doubly blessed in the former and the latter.  Michael was first married to Joan (Kennedy), where families of the young couple had summer homes and where they initially met. They raised their two children, Tarryn (wife of Scott Morrissette and mother of Vivian, of New Bedford) and Garrick (companion of Jeni Francoeur, of Plymouth), in Onset, Massachusetts.  Mike and Joan’s marriage ended in an (eventual) amicable divorce.

Michael’s second marriage to Alexandra Carlis Perrin (of Brookline, daughter of Maggy and George), brought joy and families together.  Alexandra and Michael summered and entertained at his wife’s family home in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.  Ever the admitted workaholic, Mike relaxed in OOB.  With a glass of Bombay Sapphire and tonic, a fat cigar, and the NY Times crossword puzzle Mike held court from his perch on the porch.  Ever the travelers, both Alex and Mike loved exploring new places—especially where he could practice his conversational French, drive fast, and enjoy the local cuisine and libations via houseboat and canal.

For years, Mike tore across the highways and byways, in faster and faster cars, as a sales rep covering hundreds of thousands of miles throughout the Northeast and Canada. State Troopers in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey (not excluding the southern states, portions of Canada and some European countries) will hopefully lower their radar guns for the man who kept their quota numbers up. He took great pride in working in the marine engine industry and had many colleagues in many different ports. As ill as he was, Mike worked tirelessly as the Northeast Regional VP of Northern Lights.

Visitation hours for Mike will be on Tuesday September 23, 2014 from 3-7pm at Caggiano Funeral Home, 147 Winthrop Street, Winthrop, Massachusetts.  Funeral services will follow on Wednesday, September 24th at 11am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 222 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop. Following the church service, everyone is invited to celebrate Mike’s life at Cottage Park Yacht Club, 76 Orlando Avenue, Winthrop. A private burial will take place in June.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Sheets of Love (www.facebook.com/sheetsoflove), to The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research (www.lustgarten.org), or to a charity of your choice. Ice bucket dumping is optional. Mike would have preferred said ice to be used in a cocktail anyway.
