I was sad to hear of the passing of Mrs. Petersen, and wish to extend my condolences to the family. Having grown up across the street, I always remember seeing Joan, whether in her yard gardening or on the front step. She always greeted you with a smile and more often than not had something funny to say and who could forget that bellowing laugh. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers.

You did so much good work during your life. You can rest now Joan. I am richer to have known you and am poorer without you here. Until we meet again Joan, love to you always.

Joan was an inspiration to so many women! She was my friend, my mentor and sometimes my mother. She loved me until I learned to love myself. I'm so glad I was able to spend time with her when I was visiting Winthrop in 2013. At that time she guided me through yet another life crisis with her firm but loving touch. She will be watching over us all, I'm sure, because I can still hear her voice echoing in my head....

My heart goes out to all of Joan's family and friends at this time. I worked with Joan at the EPA for many years. She was a mentor. friend, and second mother to me. She taught me things I will cherish all my life. She helped me through some of the hardest times in my life. Like she was for so many others, Joan was an angel that came to me when I needed her most. Although I haven't seen her for years, I have and will always love her and always remember all that she taught me. God bless you Joan, RIP.
