Having known Pat since 1973 and joining the Navy together in 1977 brings the memory of Operation Eagle Claw in 1980. Both our ships were in the Persian Gulf area the day after the Iranian hostage rescue attempt i recall being on the signal bridge watching for his ship to exit the Straights of Hormuz. When I saw his ship appear out of the haze I knew then he was safe and under the protection of the rest of our battle group.
